"Last night, I had a dream about snakes.
In my dream, I lay in my bed, half asleep. Something touched my foot. Something cold and smooth.
I pulled my blanket up. In the moonlight, I saw it. A snake. Green and yellow, as long as my arm. It slid across my bed like water.
I screamed and jumped up. But the floor was moving.
More snakes. Everywhere. They came out from under the bed. From the closet. From the walls. Big ones, small ones, black ones, brown ones.
They covered my floor like a living carpet. Their bodies twisted over each other. Hundreds of them. Maybe thousands.
The door was only five steps away. But the floor was all snakes.
I stood on my bed, shaking. One snake climbed up the blanket. Then another. Then five more.
I grabbed my pillow and swung it. "Get away! Get away!"
They did not stop. They never stopped. They came from everywhere.
One wrapped around my ankle. Cold and strong. I kicked and kicked. It fell off. Then another one grabbed my wrist.
The window! I could jump out the window.
I ran across the bed and pushed the window open. Cold night air came in.
But then I saw the tree outside. The branches were full of snakes. They hung from every branch like strange fruit. Their eyes shined in the dark. Hundreds of little yellow lights.
There was no escape. Not the door. Not the window.
They climbed onto my bed. My legs. My arms. My chest. I screamed until my throat burned.
Then one snake looked at me. Right into my eyes. It opened its mouth. And it spoke with a human voice.
"You can't run from us," it said. "We live inside you."
Then I woke up.
I tore off my blanket. No snakes. Just my empty room.
But for the rest of the night, I kept my feet off the floor."
