Mother's Passing Dream Reveals Fear of Loss Meaning & Interpretation

"Last night, I had a dream that my mother was dying. In my dream, she sat in her old chair by the window. Her hands were thin like paper. Her hair was all white. She smiled at me. "Come here," she said softly. "Sit with me." I sat on the floor next to her chair, like I did when I was small. She touched my hair. Her hand was cold. "I made soup for you," she said. "It's on the stove." "But you can barely stand," I said. Tears came to my eyes. "A mother always finds a way," she smiled. I brought the soup and fed her one spoon at a time. Most of it spilled on her chin. She did not have the strength to swallow. "I'm tired," she whispered. "So tired." "Rest then," I said. My voice broke. "I'll stay right here." She closed her eyes. Her breathing became slow. Slow. Slower. "Mom?" I whispered. No answer. "Mom?" I touched her face. It was still warm. I laid my head on her lap and cried like a baby. The soup got cold on the table. The sun went down outside the window. "Don't leave me," I said into her dress. "Please don't leave me." But her hand on my head did not move again. Then I woke up. My face was wet with tears. I ran to the kitchen without thinking. My mother was there. She was making soup. Real soup. She turned around and smiled. "Good morning," she said. "Hungry?" I hugged her so tight she dropped her spoon."
