"Last night, I had a dream about seeing a dead person.
In my dream, I sat on a bus going downtown. It was crowded. People were reading phones and listening to music. Everything was normal.
Then I looked at the seat in front of me.
My old friend Alex sat there. He turned around and smiled at me.
"Hey! Long time no see!" he said.
I froze. Alex died last year. I saw the car accident news myself. I wore a black suit to his funeral. I put a white flower on his coffin.
But here he was. Same face. Same laugh. Same blue jacket he always wore.
"Aren't you... dead?" I whispered.
He laughed. "Don't be silly," he said. "We're going to the game tonight, remember?"
I opened my mouth, but no words came out. People around us did not react. A woman next to him read her book. Didn't they see him? Didn't they know?
I rubbed my eyes. He was still there.
"Say something," he said. "You're acting strange."
"Everyone says you died," I said slowly. "There was an accident. I went to your funeral."
His smile disappeared. "What are you talking about?" he said. "I'm right here."
The bus stopped. He stood up. "This is my stop. You coming?"
I wanted to follow him. My body moved to stand. But something held me back.
He walked to the door. Then he looked back at me one more time. His face looked sad now.
"Funny thing," he said. "I don't remember getting off this bus."
Then the door closed, and the bus drove on.
Then I woke up.
I lay in bed, completely confused. Was it a dream? Or did Alex really visit me? I never figured it out. Even now, I don't know."
