"So there was a lake. Behind my house. There's never been a lake behind my house, it's just a fence and the neighbor's dead lawn, but in the dream there was a lake and it had always been there. That's how dreams work I guess. You just accept the new geography. I walked down to it. Not scared. Just walked. And the water was that still kind of water, no ripples, like glass, like it was holding its breath. I stood at the edge for a while and looked at it. Couldn't see the bottom. Couldn't see my reflection either, which I noticed but didn't think was strange. Then I was in it. Not swimming. Just standing. Waist deep. Warm. And I don't remember deciding to go in. I just was. And it felt good. That's the thing I can't explain. It just felt good, standing there in this lake that shouldn't exist, looking back at my house from the water, and the lights were on in the kitchen and I could see someone moving around in there but I didn't know who. Somebody called my name from the shore. I didn't turn around. I just kept standing there. And the water got higher, up to my chest, up to my chin, and I still wasn't scared. I was calm. Fully calm. Like the water was the safest place I'd ever been. Like if I just let it, it would hold me. I woke up and I was warm. Actually warm, like I'd been in the sun. And I lay there and I wasn't sad or scared, I was just... quiet. Like the lake was still in me somewhere. I got up and looked out the window at the neighbor's dead lawn and for a second I was genuinely disappointed there was no water there. Stood there for a while. Made tea instead of coffee. Didn't feel like rushing anything that morning."
