The Empty Desk: A Dream of Job Loss & Meaning & Interpretation

"Last night, I had a dream about losing my job. In my dream, I walked into my office as usual. But something was wrong. My desk was empty. My computer was gone. My photos and my little plant were not there anymore. My boss stood near the door. He looked at me and said, "You don't work here anymore." I felt cold. I wanted to ask why, but no words came out. My coworkers looked at me. No one said anything. They just looked down at their desks. I walked out of the building. It was raining. I held a small box with my things inside. I did not know where to go. My family was waiting at home. What would I tell them? I woke up with tears on my face. My heart was beating fast. For a few minutes, I believed it was real. Then I remembered. I still have my job. I still have my desk, my plant, my photos. Everything was just a dream. But the sadness stayed with me all morning. It taught me something. My job is important, but it is not my whole life. I should save money. I should learn new skills. And I should be kind to people who lose their jobs, because it can happen to anyone. Now I look at my desk differently. I am thankful for it, every single day."
