"Last night, I had a dream about a snake.
In my dream, I sat by a river on a hot day. The water was clear and slow. Birds sang in the trees. I dipped my feet in the cool water.
Something touched my foot. Something smooth.
I looked down. A snake swam around my legs. Green and gold, with small black eyes.
I froze. I did not know what to do. Run? Scream? Stay still?
But the snake did not bite. It swam in circles around my feet. Calm and slow. Like it wanted to play.
Then it lifted its head out of the water and looked at me.
"Why are you afraid?" it asked. Its voice was soft, like leaves rubbing together.
I almost fell into the water. "You... you can talk?"
"Many things can talk," the snake said. "You just never listen."
It climbed out of the river and sat on the rock next to me. Its body shined in the sun. Beautiful, in a strange way.
"Are you going to bite me?" I asked.
"Should I?" the snake said. "You humans step on our homes. You cut our forests. You fear us without reason."
I had no answer. It was true.
"Follow me," the snake said. It slid into the water and swam upstream.
I followed it along the riverbank. We walked for a long time. The snake told me about the forest. About the fish, the birds, the trees. About how everything is connected. How everything has a place.
I listened. For the first time, I really listened.
Finally, we reached a big tree. The snake wrapped around a low branch.
"This is my home," it said. "Now you know the way."
"Will I see you again?" I asked.
"Look for me when you are lost," it said. "I will be here."
Then it closed its eyes and became very still. Like a rope on the branch.
I reached out to touch it. But when my fingers touched its skin, it was not a snake anymore. It was just an old green vine.
Then I woke up.
I lay in bed, confused. Was it a dream? A lesson? A visit?
I still don't know. But that morning, I looked at the trees outside my window differently.
Maybe everything is alive. Maybe everything speaks.
We just need to listen."
