"So I'm underwater. Don't know how I got there. Just suddenly I'm under and the light's getting further away and I'm sinking. And I'm not fighting it. Not swimming up. Not thrashing. Just sinking. Watching the surface get smaller. And I remember thinking "I should panic" but I didn't. I just. Didn't. The water was cool and it was quiet down there and my lungs were burning a little but it was far away, that burning, like it was happening to someone else. And I kept sinking and the light kept fading and I kept not doing anything about it. There were things floating past me. A shoe. A plastic bag. Somebody's hat. Just drifting by like they were on their way somewhere. And I watched them go and I thought "I should probably care about this" and I didn't. I just watched them. And kept sinking. Then I stopped sinking. Just. Hovered there. In the dark water. And I could feel my heart beating, slow, slower than normal, and I could feel the water moving around me, holding me up, holding me in. And I closed my eyes. Just closed them. And it was quiet. The quietest thing I've ever felt. And I thought "this is okay. This is actually okay." And I wasn't scared. I wasn't sad. I was just. There. Floating. In the dark. And it was fine. I woke up and I was breathing. Deep breaths, like I'd actually been holding it. And I lay there and I could still feel the water. That pressure. That quiet. And I didn't want to move. Didn't want to break it. I got up eventually. Made coffee. Went to work. And all day I kept thinking about that quiet. Kept catching myself trying to find it again. In traffic. In meetings. In my own kitchen. Never quite got there. But I know it's down there somewhere. Waiting. And that's okay. That's more than okay."
