The empty Feast and the silent Hallway

"I was in this huge, dim ballroom filled with long wooden tables, surrounded by dozens of people I felt like I knew intimately, though I couldn't place a single one of their faces. Everyone was laughing and passing heavy serving platters around, but there was no actual food on any of the plates. I kept trying to ask the guy sitting next to me where we were supposed to hand our parking tickets, but every time I opened my mouth, he would just nod warmly and hand me an empty crystal glass. Suddenly the room shifted into a narrow hallway inside a high school I never went to. The crowd was shuffling past me in total silence now, all wearing heavy winter coats even though it felt boiling hot. A woman grabbed my sleeve and whispered that "the main group" was waiting for me at the back of the bus, but when I turned around to follow her, she had blended right back into the sea of faces, leaving me standing there trying to figure out who I was supposed to be looking for."
