"Last night I dreamed I was back in my hometown in Oregon, at a park I know well. My daughter was playing beside the stream, right between two alligators. I kept thinking they shouldn't be there. I screamed at her to move away, but she wasn't listening and kept reaching out to touch them. One of them clamped onto her foot and tried to drag her into the water, so I hit it over the head with my purse until it let go. We got away, but I was furious with her for not listening.
Then the dream shifted, and I was walking along a nature trail with both of my kids. Alligators were coming through several open gates. This time it was my son who kept walking toward them, convinced they were too slow to catch him. I screamed at him to leave them alone, but he treated it like a game. One alligator suddenly bolted at him and ran into a clearing ahead.
I shut the gate to keep more from coming through, but we still had to go into the clearing. There I saw a house with a long flight of steps up to the porch. I told the kids to climb, thinking the alligator couldn't manage the stairs. A couple came out of the house, and I apologized for being on their porch and explained that an alligator had been chasing us. The man looked at me and said, "There aren't any alligators in this area."
And then I woke up."
Core Theme
"This dream reflects a mother's deep fear of losing control as her children face hidden dangers that she alone perceives. The alligators embody threats that feel out of place and ignored, while the children's defiance and the final denial of the danger suggest a tension between protective instinct and the limits of vigilance."
