"So my friend died. In the dream. It just happened, off-screen almost, like someone told me in passing. And I remember nodding. Just nodding. Like "okay, got it." And then I went to the kitchen to make a sandwich. And I'm spreading mustard and I'm thinking about the sandwich and then I'm like "wait. Didn't someone just die?" and I felt bad for forgetting, so I tried to be sad, but the sadness wouldn't come. It was like trying to cry on command. Nothing there. Then we're at the funeral. Open casket. And it's him, but he looks like a wax figure of himself, you know that uncanny thing. His face is too smooth. And I'm standing in line and the line isn't moving and I realize I'm at the wrong funeral, this is somebody else's, but I stayed anyway because I didn't want to be rude. That's the dream logic. Didn't want to be rude at a stranger's funeral. His mom was there. She hugged me and said something I couldn't hear and I just kept nodding. Kept nodding. She handed me a plate of food, like a full plate, potato salad and everything, and I'm holding this plate at a funeral going "where do I put this." There was nowhere to put it. I just held it. The whole dream. That plate. He showed up at some point. Alive. Just walked in the back door like nothing, grabbed a soda from the fridge, and I'm standing there with the plate going "but you died" and he shrugged and said "yeah but I got better" and everyone laughed and I laughed too because it was funny. It was genuinely funny in the dream. I woke up and immediately texted him. Just "you alive?" and he responded with a question mark and then "yeah why" and I said "no reason." I didn't tell him. What am I supposed to say. I lay there and I could still feel the weight of that plate. Weird thing to remember. Not his face. Not the casket. The plate."
Emotion: Confusion
Freudian Analysis
Core Theme

"This dream suggests you are navigating a fear of loss or an actual emotional distance from a friend, and your psyche is using numbness, politeness, and absurd humor as defenses. The dead friend who returns and the funeral plate both point to unresolved grief or responsibility that you cannot simply put down. Your childhood may have taught you to nod, comply, and keep the peace instead of feeling messy emotions."

Hidden Emotions and Symbols

✦ Friend's Off-Screen Death

Represents a loss or change that felt too sudden and emotionally distant to process.

✦ Nodding And Mustard Sandwich

Reflects defensive numbing, routine distraction, and avoidance of painful feelings.

✦ Wax-Figure Casket And Wrong Funeral

Indicates depersonalization, misplaced grief, and fear of being rude or improper.

✦ Plate From His Mother

Inherited grief, caretaking burdens, and guilt you cannot put down.

✦ Alive Friend With Soda

Represents wish fulfillment, denial of death, and relief that connection survives in fantasy.

Insight

You do not have to force sadness to prove that you care, and numbness is often a protective defense rather than a lack of love. Notice what plate you are carrying for someone else, then practice setting it down through journaling, honest conversation, or a small boundary. The dream's humor and the living friend suggest that connection can survive confusion, but only if you stop performing the feeling and start listening to it.
