"it was the house from when I was a kid but also not, the outside was right, that weird yellow paint we had, but going inside felt like walking into somewhere I was trespassing even though some part of me knew it was mine. hallway was longer than it should be. I kept opening doors expecting my old room and getting rooms I didn't recognize, one had all this furniture covered in sheets like nobody had lived there in years, dust just sitting in the light from a window that doesn't exist in the real house. didn't question that too much at the time. I was looking for something, never figured out what, just this pulling feeling forward, room to room. found my parents in the kitchen at one point, except younger, or maybe it just felt that way, and they were doing something totally normal, my dad reading the paper, and I wanted so bad to say something to them, tell them things maybe, but I couldn't make myself interrupt, like I wasn't supposed to be seen. so I just stood in the doorway watching. that part sat heavy in my chest, still kind of does thinking about it now. went upstairs and the stairs creaked in a way I swear I remember from real life, that specific sound, third step from the top. up there everything was emptier, boxes stacked but never opened, and I had this sinking feeling like we were leaving again, moving again, even though nobody said that out loud, I just knew it the way dreams tell you things. sat down on the floor of what used to be my room, empty now, just carpet, and I didn't cry but I felt like I was about to. then I was somewhere else entirely, a parking lot maybe, and the house was gone from the dream like it was never the point."
