"I dreamed that my mother had died, but I don't remember anyone telling me. I just knew it, and everyone around me was acting like I should already understand what had happened. We were at home getting ready for something. Her shoes were by the door and her jacket was hanging on the chair, so I kept expecting her to walk in. I tried calling her phone, but it rang from somewhere upstairs. When I went to look, she was sitting on the edge of the bed. She looked completely normal. I started crying and kept saying, “You're not supposed to be here,” which made no sense because I didn't want her to leave. She asked me if I had eaten anything that day. I couldn't answer. Then she started packing a small bag, folding clothes that didn't belong to her. I asked where she was going, but she just said she'd be back later. The dream changed and I was at a crowded train station. I could see her on the other side of the tracks, waving at me. I tried to get over there, but every staircase led back to the house. By the time I reached the platform, the train was gone. I was still holding her jacket. I woke up with that heavy feeling in my chest, and for a few seconds I forgot she was alive."

Freudian Analysis
Core Theme

"This dream reflects a profound ambivalence about separation from your mother, mixing grief, guilt, and a childlike wish for her enduring presence. It suggests repressed dependency needs and unfinished emotional individuation, where part of you knows you must move forward while another part keeps returning to the childhood home. Defense mechanisms like denial and regression appear as you search for her, receive nurturing questions, and miss the train of adulthood."

Insight

Your dream asks you to acknowledge ambivalent feelings toward your mother without judging them; love and the need to separate can coexist. Practice small rituals that honor her while also tending to your own needs, especially around comfort and nourishment. If this grief feels old or overwhelming, therapy can help you distinguish present reality from childhood defenses.
