Porch rain and the static That stayed

"I was sitting on a porch I've never lived in, watching it come down. Not hard. Just steady. The kind that sounds like static on a TV in another room. I wasn't waiting for anything. That's the thing. I had nowhere to be. My phone was inside somewhere and I didn't care. Then the yard was flooded but only up to the porch step, like it knew the limit. Frogs started up. A lot of them. I couldn't see any but they were loud. My dad sat down next to me. He didn't say anything either. We just watched. He had a cup of coffee and I could smell it even though I was dreaming. That always throws me. At some point it stopped but the sound didn't. Just kept going, that static, long after the sky cleared. I didn't point it out. Neither did he. I woke up and it was actually raining outside. For real. I lay there and listened and didn't check the time, which I never do. Made coffee. Drank it by the window. Didn't turn on the news."
