Crossing the river to nowhere

"I was standing beside a river with my shoes in my hands, trying to figure out how to get to the other side. There was no bridge, just water moving over some slippery rocks. I could see a little house across the river, and for some reason I felt I had to get there before someone left. I stepped into the water, and it was much colder than I expected. Halfway across, the current got stronger and I started losing my balance. I grabbed a rock and stayed there for a while, scared to move either way. Then I heard someone calling my name, but when I looked up, there was nobody around. Suddenly the water became shallow, barely covering my ankles, and I walked straight across. On the other side, I couldn't find the house anymore. I was standing in a supermarket holding a bag of oranges. I woke up wondering why crossing that river had felt so important."
