"Something had happened to the world, and we were all poor, searching for refuge and food. Everything was dry, dusty, and hot. I was walking along a dirt road with a child who wasn't mine, a woman, and two other people I never saw clearly. They talked quietly in the background, and I only knew we were friends. I was worried, because we couldn't find any food to bring back to the refuge, a place I had never been to but somehow knew about. We stopped at a flimsy wooden structure, and there I saw a pair of eyes. I knew at once they were my boyfriend's. I picked them up, cleaned them, and whispered, "Why would anyone do this to him? Don't worry, babe, I got them back for you." I wrapped them in a silk cloth and tucked them into my pocket. The group began to complain about the lack of food. Then the child stepped out into the sun and started to pray. I couldn't make out the words or even the language. Out of nowhere, it began to rain rice. So much rice, clean and white. We stared in shock and asked the child what he had done. He said he had prayed to his god, whose name I couldn't understand. We hurried to pack the grains into big sacks, far too heavy to carry. Suddenly we were arriving at the refuge, and I was asking everyone, "Has anyone seen him?" No one answered or seemed to care. But he had heard me. He came out of a kitchen they had set up, where he seemed to be in charge of the cooking. "Babe! You're here!" I cried. He rushed over and touched my face, telling me how happy he was to see me alive and well. I saw that he had no eyes. "I got your eyes!" I said, and handed him the silk cloth. I never saw or felt the eyes clearly, I just knew they were his. He put them in, blinked, and could see again. He saw me, kissed me, and held me. I showed him the sacks of rice. There were more than twenty, and I wondered how we had ever carried them. But the thought passed, and a calm hope settled over me. My boyfriend was smiling, and the people around us began to celebrate. When I woke up, I carried that last feeling with me, a gentle certainty that everything would be all right soon, no matter how hard things were."
